A wood-burning appliance is one of the best features of a log cabin. It provides heat, ambiance, and a gathering point. But it also requires regular maintenance — more than most people realize.
Proper maintenance isn’t just about efficiency. It’s about safety. Creosote buildup in chimneys causes thousands of house fires every year.
The Annual Chimney Sweep
The most important maintenance task is having your chimney professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year, preferably before heating season begins.
What the sweep does:
- Removes creosote buildup from the chimney walls
- Inspects the flue for cracks, gaps, or damage
- Checks the chimney cap and spark arrestor
- Examines the firebox and damper
- Verifies proper draft
