Log cabins are made of wood. Wood attracts insects. The combination makes pest management an essential part of cabin maintenance.

The good news is that most insect damage is preventable. The key is knowing what to look for and addressing problems early.

The Most Common Cabin Pests

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants don’t eat wood — they excavate it to create nesting galleries. They’re attracted to moist, decaying wood.

Signs of infestation:

  • Sawdust piles near baseboards or window sills
  • Large black ants visible indoors, especially at night
  • Rustling sounds inside walls
  • Winged ants in spring (these are swarmers, looking to establish new colonies)

Treatment: Eliminate moisture sources first. Then apply bait stations or call a professional. Carpenter ant colonies can be large and difficult to eradicate without targeted treatments.

Termites

Termites eat wood and can cause structural damage before you notice them. Subterranean termites are most common in log homes.

Signs of infestation:

  • Tight-fitting doors or windows (termite damage causes movement)
  • Small winged insects near windows in spring

These small beetles lay eggs in wood pores. The larvae tunnel through the wood for 1–5 years before emerging as adults.

The most effective insect prevention happens before the cabin is built.

  • Use treated wood. Borate-treated logs resist both insects and fungal decay.
  • Keep logs off the ground. A foundation that raises logs at least 12 inches prevents ground insects from accessing the wood.
  • Install physical barriers. Metal termite shields on foundation tops block subterranean termites.

Ongoing Prevention

  • Maintain the finish. A intact exterior finish prevents insects from penetrating the wood surface.
  • Control moisture. Insects are attracted to damp wood. Fix leaks promptly, maintain gutters, and keep vegetation away from walls.
  • Remove wood debris. Don’t stack firewood against the cabin. Remove stumps and dead trees near the structure.
  • Inspect annually. Walk the perimeter and look for signs of insect activity.

The Moisture Connection

Insect problems are almost always linked to moisture problems. Wood with a moisture content above 20% is vulnerable to both rot and insects. Wood below 20% moisture is resistant to both.

This means your moisture management routine — gutters, grading, finish maintenance — is also your primary insect prevention strategy. If you’re keeping the cabin dry, you’re already doing the most important thing to prevent insect damage.

Treatment Options

Borate Treatments

Borate compounds are the most common and effective treatment for log home insect problems. They penetrate the wood and poison insects that ingest them. Borates are low-toxicity to humans and pets.

Application: Borates can be applied as a spray or brush-on treatment to exposed wood surfaces. For existing infestations, they can be injected into affected areas.

Fumigation

In severe, active infestations, fumigation may be necessary. This involves tenting the cabin and introducing a gas that penetrates all wood surfaces.

Considerations: Fumigation is expensive ($5–$15 per square foot), requires the cabin to be empty for several days, and kills all insects but doesn’t prevent reinfestation.

Heat Treatment

Raising the interior temperature to 120–140°F for several hours kills wood-boring insects. This is less common in cabins due to the difficulty of heating the heavy log mass evenly.
