Replacing Rotting Logs: When and How to Do It

Despite your best maintenance efforts, logs can eventually rot. When they do, you need to assess whether the damage is cosmetic or structural — and act accordingly.

Assessing the Damage

Surface rot (less than 1/4 inch deep): Usually cosmetic. Can be treated with a wood hardener and filled. No structural concern.

Moderate rot (1/4 to 1 inch deep): Needs attention. The affected area should be removed and filled. The structural integrity of the log may be partially compromised.

Deep rot (more than 1 inch deep): The log’s structural capacity is compromised. Replacement or significant structural repair is needed.

The screwdriver test: Press a screwdriver into the affected area. If it penetrates easily more than 1/4 inch, the rot extends deeper than surface level. If the screwdriver sinks in more than 1 inch, the log needs replacement.

When Replacement Is Necessary

Log replacement is a major project. It’s necessary when:

  • Rot affects more than 30% of a log’s cross-section
  • Multiple adjacent logs are affected in the same area
  • The rot extends into the log’s structural core
  • The log is supporting significant weight (structural posts, corners)
  • Attempts to repair with fillers have failed repeatedly

The Replacement Process

Full log replacement should be done by a professional. The process involves:

  1. Supporting the structure above the damaged log with temporary jacks
  2. Cutting out the damaged section
  3. Preparing the new log (cutting, notching, and treating)
  4. Installing the new log and securing it in place
  5. Sealing and finishing to match the surrounding logs

Cost: Professional log replacement costs $500–$1,500 per linear foot depending on accessibility, log size, and finish requirements.

The Partial Replacement Option

For localized rot that doesn’t span the full length of a log, a “dutchman” repair can be used. This involves cutting out only the damaged section and fitting a precisely-shaped new piece.

This is less expensive than full replacement but requires skilled craftsmanship to blend seamlessly.

Preventing Recurrence

After replacing rotted logs, identify and fix the moisture source that caused the original damage:

  • Improve roof overhangs
  • Address grading and drainage issues
  • Repair gutters that were dumping water on the affected area
  • Improve ventilation
  • Apply proper finish to the replacement logs

Without addressing the cause, the replacement logs will eventually rot too.
